Getting turned down for furniture financing can be frustrating, especially when you are shopping because you actually need something. The mattress has had enough. The sofa has officially given up. You just moved and the dining room currently consists of two folding chairs and optimism.
But a financing decision does not have to be the end of your furniture search.
At American Freight, we suggest taking a step back and looking at the purchase itself. You may be able to adjust the budget, prioritize the pieces you need first, consider layaway, or simply give yourself more time before making the purchase.
Most importantly, do not stretch your budget just because your original plan did not work out.
1. Understand That Financing Approval Is Not Guaranteed
Furniture financing and other pay-over-time options are subject to approval. American Freight works with third-party providers, including American First Finance (AFF), and the products, rates and terms available can vary based on factors including location and the type of agreement offered.
AFF states that applications may be reviewed using information you provide along with identity verification, bank verification, third-party information, credit reporting information and/or previous experience with AFF. Approval is not guaranteed.
So if you are not approved, do not automatically assume it means you can never purchase the furniture you need. It means that particular application did not result in an approval.

2. Make the Purchase Smaller
One of the simplest options is to reconsider how much furniture you are trying to purchase at once.
If you were shopping for an entire bedroom, maybe the mattress and bed are the immediate needs while the dresser and nightstands can wait. If you were replacing your living room, perhaps the sofa comes first and the coffee table comes later.
We suggest dividing the purchase into three categories:
- Need now: The furniture that solves an immediate problem.
- Need soon: Pieces that make the room work better but can wait.
- Want later: Matching and decorative pieces that complete the room.
There is nothing wrong with furnishing a room one piece at a time. In many cases, it can make the decision easier and the total purchase more manageable.
3. Look for a Lower-Priced Alternative
A different price point does not necessarily mean giving up on the room you want.
American Freight carries furniture and mattresses across a range of prices, including closeouts, overstock and other value-oriented inventory. Availability changes by store, so it can be worth comparing several options before deciding that a category is outside your budget.
For example, instead of starting with a specific model, start with what you want to spend. Search current American Freight inventory for beds under $500, browse living-room furniture, or check current clearance furniture.
Sometimes the better question is not, “How do I pay for this furniture?” It is, “Is there another piece that gives me what I need for less?”
4. Consider American Freight Layaway
If financing is not the right option, American Freight layaway may provide another way to plan for your furniture purchase.
Layaway works differently from financing. Instead of borrowing money or entering into a financing agreement to take merchandise home and pay later, you make payments toward an eligible American Freight purchase over time. Financing cannot be used to make payments on a layaway order.
American Freight layaway begins with an initial payment, followed by payments toward the purchase until the required balance is paid. Under the standard layaway payment schedule, payments are required every 30 days. For customers who budget around a monthly paycheck, retirement payment or other fixed monthly income, that schedule may make it easier to plan when payments need to be made.
Unlike some payment arrangements that may have weekly or bi-weekly payment schedules, a 30-day schedule means you aren't necessarily planning for a payment every week or every other paycheck. The important thing is to understand the payment schedule in your specific layaway agreement and make sure it works with your budget.
Merchandise availability is addressed when the layaway is completed, rather than a specific physical item being held throughout the entire payment period.
Not every product is eligible for layaway, and layaway terms, policies and requirements can vary by state and location. Check with your local American Freight store and review the applicable layaway agreement for complete details.
AMERICAN FREIGHT TIP: If you budget month-to-month, layaway's 30-day payment schedule may be worth considering. Financing lets qualified customers take home eligible merchandise and pay over time, while layaway works in the opposite direction: you pay toward the purchase over time before completing it.
5. Give Yourself More Time to Save
Sometimes waiting is the best financial option available.
If the purchase is not urgent, determine how much you can comfortably set aside each week, each payday or each month. Even a relatively short period of saving can change the price range you are comfortable shopping.
It can also give you time to watch for new inventory. American Freight's assortment changes regularly, so the choices available today may not be the same choices available several weeks from now.
Waiting is not nearly as exciting as taking home a new sectional today. It can still be the right move.
6. Prioritize the Furniture That Affects Everyday Life
If the budget will not cover everything, spend it where you will notice it most.
For a bedroom, that may mean prioritizing the mattress before buying an entire matching bedroom set.
For a living room, it might mean starting with the sofa or main seating and adding tables and accent pieces later.
For a first apartment, a mattress, somewhere comfortable to sit and basic dining or storage furniture may matter more than making every room look finished immediately.
A home can come together over time.
7. Be Careful About Applying for More Financing Just Because One Option Did Not Work
A declined application can make it tempting to immediately start applying elsewhere.
Before doing that, understand the terms of any new application or agreement. Different providers may evaluate applications differently, but that does not automatically make another offer affordable or appropriate for your household.
Look beyond the payment amount. Understand the total cost, payment schedule, fees, interest or lease costs, early-purchase options and consequences of missed payments before signing anything.
This matters because pay-over-time products can work very differently. For example, AFF offers several types of agreements, including bank loans, retail installment agreements and leases, and a lease is specifically not a loan or credit transaction. Costs and ownership structures differ depending on the product.
8. Ask the Store What Other Options Are Available
You do not have to figure everything out before walking into the store.
Talk with an American Freight associate about what you need, your approximate budget and whether you are looking to purchase immediately or over time. They may be able to help you compare lower-priced merchandise, available inventory, layaway eligibility and current third-party payment options.

The Goal Is Furniture You Can Actually Afford
Getting furniture into your home matters. So does what happens to your budget after it gets there.
If financing does not work out, reconsider the size of the purchase, compare lower-priced alternatives, prioritize the pieces you need most, explore layaway where available or give yourself additional time to save.
American Freight's whole value proposition is built around helping customers find furniture and mattresses at prices that make sense. Sometimes the best way to do that is financing. Sometimes it is layaway. And sometimes it is simply finding a better deal.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I am not approved for furniture financing?
A financing decision does not prevent you from purchasing furniture using another available payment method. You can consider a lower-priced product, reduce the size of the purchase, save and purchase later, or ask your local American Freight store about layaway and other available options.
Does American Freight offer layaway?
Yes. American Freight offers layaway on eligible merchandise. Layaway allows customers to make payments toward a purchase over time rather than using financing to take the merchandise home immediately. Eligibility, terms and policies can vary by state and location.
Does layaway require furniture financing?
No. American Freight's layaway policy specifically separates layaway from financing, and financing cannot be used to make payments on a layaway order.
Is furniture financing guaranteed?
No. Financing and other third-party payment options are subject to application review and approval. Products, rates and terms may also vary.
Should I apply somewhere else if I am declined?
That is a personal financial decision. Before submitting another application, understand the terms, costs and payment obligations involved and consider whether changing the purchase amount, using layaway or saving toward the purchase may be a better fit.
Can I furnish a room without buying everything at once?
Absolutely. Start with the pieces that affect everyday life most and add the rest over time. A mattress before the matching nightstands is perfectly reasonable. Your nightstands will forgive you.
